Retaining walls we build in Dundas
Dundas is "the Valley Town," and that name shows up in the backyards. The streets climb off the valley floor and the escarpment closes in fast, so a lot of lots here carry real slope, the kind that genuinely needs a wall to hold the grade and turn a hillside into usable yard. Permits and engineering for a retaining wall in Dundas
A retaining wall is a structure, and Ontario treats the tall ones that way. A wall over about 1.0 m (3 ft) in exposed height, or one holding back a surcharge (a driveway, a building, or a steep slope loading the top), is a designated structure under Ontario Building Code Part 4That means it needs a building permit and an engineered design, often with a geotechnical review of the soil. We don't guess on that line. We confirm it with the City and bring in the engineering when the wall calls for it.
Under about 1 m, a wall usually needs no permit, but it still has to be built right, on a proper base with drainage behind it. The permit isn't the only thing that decides the build. The slope and what sits above the wall do too.
Dundas adds a layer that flatter towns don't. Spencer Creek runs right through the valley, and the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) regulates the land around watercourses, floodplains, wetlands, and steep slopes, exactly the features Dundas is full of. Under Ontario Regulation 41/24, in force since April 1, 2024, you need a permit before site alteration in those regulated areas. A wall on a steep escarpment lot, or anywhere near Spencer Creek or the Dundas Valley, can fall under that, so we check it with the HCA and confirm before we break ground, rather than dig and find out after.
Drainage and base: why walls last
A retaining wall doesn't usually fail because the blocks were weak. It fails because of water and frost. Two things kill a wall in this climate:
- Hydrostatic pressure. Soil behind a wall holds water. With nowhere to go, that water builds up and pushes, and the pressure behind a tall wall is enormous. It bulges the wall, then tips it.
- Freeze-thaw. Southern Ontario's winters freeze that trapped water, it expands, and the cycle of freezing and thawing works the wall loose over a few seasons.
The fix is the same every time, and it's all in the part you can't see once the wall is up. We build on a solid compacted base, run drainage behind the wall (clear stone with a weeping tile, so water can escape instead of pooling), and compact the backfill as we go. On taller block walls we lay geogrid, reinforcement that runs back into the hillside and ties the wall to the slope it's holding. The base gets set toward frost, about 1.2 m (4 ft) down in this part of southern Ontario, so the ground under the wall isn't heaving it from below.
On a Dundas slope this matters even more, because gravity is already moving water down the hill toward the wall. Get the drainage right and the wall sheds that water and stands. Skip it, and the first wet winter starts the lean. We build it once, drained and compacted, so it holds.
