Excavation and grading work we do in Waterdown

Locates first: Ontario One Call before we dig
Before any machine touches the ground, we book the locates through Ontario One Call. It's free, and in Ontario it's the law, the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act, 2012, requires anyone digging to request locates first, whether it's a single fence post or a full foundation.
The request goes in at least five business days ahead. Ontario One Call notifies the utility owners, gas, hydro, water, telecom, who mark their buried lines so we know what's down there before the bucket drops. Digging without locates is an offence under the Act. We make that call on every job, no exceptions.
Grading and drainage that move water the right way
Most of what goes wrong on a lot comes back to water sitting where it shouldn't. Grading is how we fix it, and the rule doesn't change: water has to move away from the house, and it can't dump onto the neighbour's land.
We regrade to pull runoff off the foundation, cut swales to carry it where it should go, and extend downspouts so the roof water isn't pooling against the wall. On a new build the grading has to follow the approved lot-grading and drainage plan, and we work to that.
Waterdown ground is escarpment-top, clay pockets that hold water and heave, plus shallow soil over rock as you get closer to the brow. That mix makes drainage matter more, not less. Get the grade right and water sheds off; get it wrong and it sits, freezes, and works on whatever's nearby. It's the same reason footings here go down about 1.2 m (4 ft), past the frost line. Bearing on undisturbed soil below frost is what keeps a foundation or footing from heaving over a freeze-thaw winter. Permits, Conservation Halton, and Grindstone Creek in Waterdown
Waterdown is part of the City of Hamilton, but its watershed sits under a different authority, and that's worth knowing before you dig near water.
Foundation and structural excavation ties into the building permit for whatever you're putting up; a demolition needs its own permit. Plain landscaping and grading often need no building permit, but the dig still needs locates and still has to respect the grading rules. We confirm the permit picture with the City before we start.
The piece specific to Waterdown is the conservation authority. Waterdown sits in the Grindstone Creek watershed, Smokey Hollow and the Great Falls are on Grindstone Creek, and that watershed is entirely Conservation Halton's jurisdiction. Under Ontario Regulation 41/24, in force since April 1, 2024, a permit is required before site alteration in a regulated area: near a creek or ravine, in a floodplain or wetland, or on a steep slope. So a dig near Grindstone Creek or the ravine edge can need a Conservation Halton permit. We don't guess at it, we confirm whether your lot is regulated before we break ground.

Machine work that fits a Waterdown lot
Waterdown is really two kinds of lot, and access decides a lot of the job.
The older village core around Dundas Street East and Mill Street is tight, narrow lots, mature trees, fences close to the line, and not much room to swing a machine or stage spoil. Out in the newer subdivisions east and north off Parkside Drive, and across the wider Flamborough countryside, there's far more open ground to work.
We size the approach to the lot. On a tight village-core property that means the right-sized machine and careful access so we're not tearing up the yard to reach the dig. On the open lots up top it's a more straightforward dig. Either way we do the digging ourselves, protect what stays, and leave the site graded and cleaned up.
